وَ قَالَ الْمَسْعُودِيُّ فِي كِتَابِ مُرُوجِ الذَّهَبِ فَعَدَلَ الْحُسَيْنُ إِلَى كَرْبَلَاءَ وَ هُوَ فِي مِقْدَارِ أَلْفِ فَارِسٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ وَ أَصْحَابِهِ وَ نَحْوِ مِائَةِ رَاجِلٍ فَلَمْ يَزَلْ يُقَاتِلُ حَتَّى قُتِلَ صَلَوَاتُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ
وَ كَانَ الَّذِي تَوَلَّى قَتْلَهُ رَجُلًا مِنْ مَذْحِجٍ وَ قُتِلَ وَ هُوَ ابْنُ خَمْسٍ وَ خَمْسِينَ سَنَةً وَ قِيلَ ابْنُ تِسْعٍ وَ خَمْسِينَ سَنَةً وَ قِيلَ غَيْرُ ذَلِكَ
وَ وُجِدَ بِهِ ع يَوْمَ قُتِلَ ثَلَاثٌ وَ ثَلَاثُونَ طَعْنَةً وَ أَرْبَعٌ وَ ثَلَاثُونَ ضَرْبَةً وَ ضَرَبَ زُرْعَةُ بْنُ شَرِيكٍ التَّمِيمِيُّ لَعَنَهُ اللَّهُ كَفَّهُ الْيُسْرَى وَ طَعَنَهُ سِنَانُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ النَّخَعِيُّ لَعَنَهُ اللَّهُ ثُمَّ نَزَلَ وَ اجْتَزَّ رَأْسَهُ
وَ تَوَلَّى قَتْلَهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكُوفَةِ خَاصَّةً لَمْ يَحْضُرْهُمْ شَامِيٌّ وَ كَانَ جَمِيعُ مَنْ قُتِلَ مَعَهُ سَبْعاً وَ ثَمَانِينَ وَ كَانَ عِدَّةُ مَنْ قُتِلَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ عُمَرَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ فِي حَرْبِ الْحُسَيْنِ ع ثَمَانِيَةً وَ ثَمَانِينَ رَجُلًا.
And Al Masoudy said in the book ‘Murooj Al Zahab’ –
‘Al-Husayn-asws diverted to Karbala and he-asws was among a thousand horsemen from People-asws of his-asws Household and his-asws companions, and approximately one hundred foot-soldiers. He-asws did not cease fighting until he-asws was killed. May the Salawaat of Allah-azwj be upon him-asws. And the one who was in charge of killing him-asws was a man from Mazhij, and he-asws was killed and he-asws was fifty-five years old, and it is said, fifty-nine years old, and it is said other than that. And there were found to be with him-asws, on the day he-asws was killed, thirty-three stab wounds, and thirty-four (sword) strikes. Zur’ah Bin Shareek Al-Tameemi-la, may Allah-azwj Curse him-la, struck him-asws on his-asws left hand, and Sinan Bin Anas Al-Nakhaie-la, may Allah-azwj Curse him-la, stabbed him-asws, then he-la descended and cut off his-asws head. And the people of Al-Kufa were particularly in charge of killing him-asws, no Syrian was present with them, and the entirety of the ones killed with him-asws were eighty-seven (men), and the number of the ones killed from the companions of Umar-la Bin Sa’ad-la in battling Al-Husayn‑asws were eighty-eight men’’.
