وَ عَنْ عَمْرٍو عَنْ فُضَيْلِ بْنِ خَدِيجٍ عَنْ مَوْلَى الْأَشْتَرِ قَالَ: لَمَّا انْهَزَمَتْ مَيْمَنَةُ الْعِرَاقِ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَقْبَلَ عَلِيٌّ نَحْوَ الْمَيْسَرَةِ يَرْكُضُ لِيَسْتَثِيبَ النَّاسَ وَ يَسْتَوْقِفَهُمْ وَ يَأْمُرَهُمْ بِالرُّجُوعِ نَحْوَ الْفَزَعِ فَمَرَّ بِالْأَشْتَرِ فَقَالَ يَا مَالِكُ قَالَ لَبَّيْكَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
قَالَ ائْتِ هَؤُلَاءِ الْقَوْمَ فَقُلْ لَهُمْ أَيْنَ فِرَارُكُمْ عَنِ الْمَوْتِ الَّذِي لَنْ تُعْجِزُوهُ إِلَى الْحَيَاةِ الَّتِي لَا تَبْقَى لَكُمْ
فَمَضَى الْأَشْتَرُ فَاسْتَقْبَلَ النَّاسَ مُنْهَزِمِينَ فَقَالَ لَهُمُ الْكَلِمَاتِ فَنَادَاهُمْ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ فَلَمْ يَلْتَفِتْ أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَنَا الْأَشْتَرُ فَأَقْبَلَتْ إِلَيْهِ طَائِفَةٌ وَ ذَهَبَتْ عَنْهُ طَائِفَةٌ
فَقَالَ عَضِضْتُمْ بِهَنِ أَبِيكُمْ وَ مَا أَقْبَحَ مَا قَاتَلْتُمُ الْيَوْمَ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ غُضُّوا الْأَبْصَارَ وَ عَضُّوا عَلَى النَّوَاجِذِ فَاسْتَقْبِلُوا النَّاسَ بِهَامِكُمْ وَ شُدُّوا عَلَيْهِمْ شِدَّةَ قَوْمٍ مَوْتُورِينَ بِآبَائِهِمْ وَ أَبْنَائِهِمْ وَ إِخْوَانِهِمْ حَنَقاً عَلَى عَدُوِّهِمْ قَدْ وَطَّنُوا عَلَى الْمَوْتِ أَنْفُسَهُمْ كَيْلَا يُسْبَقُوا بِثَأْرٍ
إِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ الْقَوْمَ وَ اللَّهِ لَنْ يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ إِلَّا عَنْ دِينِكُمْ لِيُطْفِئُوا السُّنَّةَ وَ يُحْيُوا الْبِدْعَةَ وَ يُدْخِلُوكُمْ فِي دِينٍ قَدْ أَخْرَجَكُمُ اللَّهُ مِنْهُ بِحُسْنِ الْبَصِيرَةِ
فَطِيبُوا عِبَادَ اللَّهِ نَفْساً بِدِمَائِكُمْ دُونَ دِينِكُمْ فَإِنَّ الْفِرَارَ فِيهِ سَلْبُ الْعِزِّ وَ الْغَلَبَةِ عَلَى الْفَيْءِ وَ ذُلُّ الْمَحْيَا وَ الْمَمَاتِ وَ عَارُ الدُّنْيَا وَ الْآخِرَةِ وَ سَخَطُ اللَّهِ وَ أَلِيمُ عِقَابِهِ
ثُمَّ قَالَ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أَخْلِصُوا إِلَيَّ مَذْحِجاً فَاجْتَمَعُوا إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ عَضِضْتُمْ بِصُمِّ الْجَنْدَلِ وَ اللَّهِ مَا أَرْضَيْتُمُ الْيَوْمَ رَبَّكُمْ وَ لَا نَصَحْتُمْ لَهُ فِي عَدُوِّهِ وَ كَيْفَ ذَلِكَ وَ أَنْتُمْ أَبْنَاءُ الْحَرْبِ وَ أَصْحَابُ الْغَارَاتِ وَ فُرْسَانُ الطِّرَارِ وَ حُتُوفُ الْأَقْرَانِ وَ مَذْحِجُ الطِّعَانِ الَّذِ
And from Amro, from Fuzeyl Bin Khadeejh, from a slave of Al Ashtar who said, ‘When the right flank of (people of) Al-Iraq was defeated on that day, Ali-asws came sprinting towards the left flank in order to redeem the people, and make them stand, and instructed with the returning to the shelter. He-asws passed by Al-Ashtar and said, ‘O Malik! ’ He said, ‘At your service, O Amir Al-Momineen-asws! ’
He-asws said: ‘Go to those people and say to them, ‘Where are you fleeing from the death which you will not be able to frustrate? To the life which will not be remaining for you? ’
Al-Ashtar went and faced the defeated people. He said the words to them and called out to them, ‘O you people, I am Malik Bin Al-Haris! ’ But not one of them turned towards him. He said, ‘O you people! I am Al-Ashtar! ’ A group faced towards him, and a group went away from him. He said, ‘You father was bitten by them with you, and how ugly is what you fought today. O you people! Close the eyes and bite upon the front teeth, and face the people with your protection, and be intense upon them with the intensity of a people fighting for their fathers, and their sons, and their brothers, with fury upon their enemies having been determined themselves upon the death, so they can precede with retaliation. By Allah-azwj! These people will never fight you all except about your religion, in order to extinguish the Sunnah, and revive the innovations, and enter you into a religion Allah-azwj has Extracted you from it by good insight. Servants of Allah-azwj! Feel good yourselves with your blood besides your religion, for the fleer in it loses the honour and the overcoming upon the booty, and the disgraced life, and the death, and shame of the world and the Hereafter, and Wrath of Allah-azwj, and His-azwj painful Punishment’. Then he said, ‘O you people! Be sincere to me of argument’. They gathered to him. He said, ‘You have bitten the solid rock. By Allah-azwj! You have not pleased your Lord-azwj today nor did you advise for Him-azwj among His-azwj enemies, and how did that happen and you are the sons of war, and companions of the raids, and the flying horses, and the lionised peers, and the plague of the stabbings, those who do not become preceding with their retaliation, and do not overlook (avenging) their blood, and a
